据说,荷兰军队的习惯是在开赴前线作战之前,都要痛饮一场,固有此说。 沃勒 (Waller) 在1665年写到:“荷兰人一旦失去酒和全部白兰地,他们借酒后鼓起之勇气也化为乌有。”
The Dutch their wine and all their brandy lose,
Disarmed of that which their courage grows.
例: It took a considerable amount of Dutch courage to enable the clerk to tell his chief just what he thought of him. 这个职员要有相当大的勇气才能把他对上司的看法讲给上司听。
